Artist Statement
I work across sculpture, painting, collage and installation. My practice is rooted in craft and abstraction. Using a variety of mediums; paper, colour, material and stitch to create 2D and 3D structures investigating and pushing the traditions of abstraction and craft. Extracting colour, pattern and shape from the world around me. I am perpetually drawn to the ephemeral beauty of the minutiae we visually absorb on a daily basis. I am eternally fascinated by the endless possibilities of fleeting shadows.
In the studio I construct surfaces that create energetic connections through stitching, cutting and marking making until I arrive at forms that intrigue me. My soft sculptures explore the interplay between structure and movement The biomorphic pieces sewn and manipulated into impermanent shapes often evoking body parts, shape shifting and morphing, constantly impacted by their environment. I explore the language of painting in a sculptural form, working with these stitched sculptures as surfaces to paint on and as ‘false’ fabric constructions; installation pieces.
